 book design

/ layout design, book design, book binding

PROJECT 1

Yearbook / concertina binding

Our brief was to design some of our class's projects from the year into a cocertina-style book, which we then printed and bound.

The beauty of the concertina is of course that one is able to fold-out all of the pages - as pictured - and view all of the content at once. We only did single-sided printing, so even when folded one is able to view the book as one would do so with a normal binding method.

PROJECT 2

"SLAM" - Poetry anthology / section sewing & cover construction

The second project was an individual publication of my own poetry, anthologised into a book which I then printed and bound. That project can also be found here in it's PDF format.

However, the idea behind this was to portray my poetry with the same emotion one would experience if it were spoken word, which I achieved through the use of grunge typography and design.

I wanted the cover to be its own project, and to add its one "weight" to the significance of the book as a whole. I bound together 10 covers in total, and cut the front-cover design out of the cover to give it dimension and depth.

PROJECT 3

Designer biography / dustcover + foreword design

In this project, our brief was to research and essentially get into the head of a famous designer, before designing what the cover to their biography might look like if we were to design it.

We could draw from their portfolio, biographies already written about them, and work they produced in general, but it had to be in their signature style and it had to be completely original.

PROJECT 4

Blank notebook / section sewing & slip cover construction

This final project was very simply binding together a blank notebook. We cut the pages, stitched them together, glued them in a cover which we also cut and put together, and pressed.

The slip cover was simply a way to protect it, but the final result is testament to the precision and care involved in binding a book from start to finish by hand.
